Cairo negotiations falter, proposal for temporary humanitarian truce

The Israeli Broadcasting Corporation "Kan 11" reported, on Sunday evening, that the negotiating team returned from Cairo to Tel Aviv.

Al-Araby Al-Jadeed newspaper reported on Sunday evening that the Israeli delegation left Cairo on Sunday afternoon, heading to Tel Aviv, carrying with it the results of the mediators’ meeting today in order to reach an agreement to cease fire in the Gaza Strip.

The newspaper reported in its report that a delegation from the Hamas movement is scheduled to leave Cairo this evening, heading to Doha to discuss with the movement's leadership the proposals presented to them by officials in Egypt.

According to Al-Araby Al-Jadeed's information, the proposals submitted included attempts to accept a partial agreement at the present time, while postponing the completion of the remaining stages to a later date.

This information indicated that "the general negotiations on reaching a comprehensive agreement to cease fire in Gaza are currently witnessing a stumbling block, in light of Israel's refusal to withdraw completely from the Gaza Strip, or to pledge a final ceasefire; these are issues that Hamas does not accept to ignore."

The newspaper noted that "no progress has been made in the current negotiations regarding Israel's position on a complete withdrawal from the Gaza Strip, as Israel has presented a vision that includes the repositioning of its forces inside the Strip, while maintaining a permanent presence in 12 deployment points, most of them in the northern Strip, in addition to the Netzarim axis."

The report stated that "in light of the stumbling of negotiations to reach a comprehensive ceasefire agreement in the Gaza Strip, mediators began working to reach a humanitarian truce ranging from four days to a week to meet humanitarian needs and bring in polio vaccines and hygiene materials in light of the spread of many diseases among the displaced and the fear of the spread of the epidemic situation in the Strip."

Regarding the negotiations on the Philadelphi Corridor between Egypt and Israel, Al-Araby Al-Jadeed newspaper indicated that there is American pressure on both sides to quickly reopen the Rafah crossing, as the American administration has reached broad outlines regarding a gradual withdrawal from the corridor to be completed by the end of this year at the latest, if a prisoner exchange deal is not reached during that period, while Israel will withdraw completely and immediately from the corridor if an exchange deal is implemented before the specified date.
