Middle East Eye: Harris' speech dashes hopes of ending massacres in Gaza
The Middle East Eye website said that Democratic candidate Kamala Harris' speech at the Democratic National Convention on Thursday dashed any hope among voters that she would change the US leadership's position on the ongoing "genocide" in Gaza and stop supplying Israel with weapons.
Harris said, "I will always defend Israel's right to defend itself, and I will always ensure that it has the ability to defend itself."
The Democratic candidate did not offer any condemnation of the "war crimes" committed by Israel or the policies of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, indicating the continuation of the "Zionist" US President Joe Biden's approach to supporting Israel, according to the writer.
The writer stressed that this position indicates that the Israeli leadership will benefit regardless of the winner of the upcoming US elections, whether it is the Republican candidate Donald Trump, who is known for his support for Israel, or Harris.
“Empty and meaningless expressions of sympathy”
The writer added that the words Harris uses to describe the suffering of the Palestinians, such as “heartbreaking” and “devastating,” are simply empty expressions of any real sympathy, and meaningless, and that the expressions that Palestine supporters expected from Harris, such as describing “war crimes” and calls for a “ceasefire,” were completely absent from her speech.
Harris delivered her speech, in which she promised that Israel would never again face “the horror it faced on October 7,” including sexual violence, to an enthusiastic American crowd chanting “USA,” while Palestinian voices were completely excluded from the stage.
Harris stressed her absolute support for Israel, saying that she would continue to support Israel in protecting itself from what she called “the terrorist organization Hamas” and “Iranian-backed terrorists.”
“The most lethal fighting force”
The Democratic candidate used hostile language toward Iran, Russia, and China in her speech, indicating that her approach to foreign policy would not differ from the Biden administration, and she vowed that if she won, “as commander-in-chief, I will ensure that America will always be the most powerful and lethal fighting force in the world.”
The writer saw that Harris’s speech, which was dominated by threats and assertions of military power, made it clear that she was determined to continue the policy of permanent war.
The writer concluded that Harris did not offer any real change in her policy toward Palestine, but rather reaffirmed her full support For Israel, this means continuing the occupation.
