UNRWA: 9 out of 10 Palestinians in Gaza forcibly displaced
The United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) said that 9 out of 10 Palestinians have been forcibly displaced in the Gaza Strip, which has been subjected to continuous Israeli aggression since October 7.
The UN agency indicated in a post on the "X" platform, today, Friday, about the displaced Palestinians in the Gaza Strip, that 9 out of every 10 people in the Strip, which has a population of about 2.3 million people, were forcibly displaced.
Displaced families are seeking shelter wherever they can, whether in overcrowded schools, destroyed buildings, modest tents on the sand or amid piles of rubbish, she added.
She stressed that none of those places are safe, "and people no longer have anywhere to go."
In a related context, UNRWA Commissioner-General Philippe Lazzarini said that the discovery of polio virus in Gaza is a dangerous development in the endless journey of misery, stressing that "it can be controlled through a ceasefire and increased vaccine flow."
Lazzarini pointed out in a post on the "X" platform, today, Friday, that six samples of polio type 2 have been detected in parts of the Gaza Strip, according to the World Health Organization, and no cases of paralysis have been discovered so far.
“This is another dangerous development in a never-ending journey of misery. Polio is emerging due to the crumbling health system, lack of clean water and hygiene materials, overcrowded shelters and poor sanitation,” he added.
“In the midst of the war, vaccination coverage among children dropped from near-universal levels to just over 85% because people were constantly being displaced, fleeing for safety,” he continued.
"Diseases do not discriminate between people. They do not know borders and do not require a visa or a permit to travel," he said, stressing that "the spread of polio in Gaza and beyond can be controlled through vaccination campaigns to reach every child wherever they are."
He stressed that "a ceasefire and increased vaccine flow will allow for control of the spread of the disease," affirming UNRWA's commitment to do so in cooperation with the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) and the World Health Organization.
