Amnesty International calls on US to impose an arms embargo on Israel

Amnesty International warned the United States of America against "complicity in war crimes" and called on it to impose an arms embargo on Israel ahead of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's speech to Congress on Wednesday.

This came in a statement, Wednesday, on the organization’s website entitled: “Warning against US complicity in war crimes in Gaza.”

The organization's executive director in the United States, Paul O'Brien, said in the statement: "The US government has obtained ample evidence from experts around the world that American-made weapons are being used by the Israeli government in war crimes and unlawful killings."

O'Brien warned that "continued arms transfers will make the United States complicit in violations of international law committed with these weapons."

He added: "Amnesty International's research has shown that the Israeli government has used weapons supplied by the United States in serious violations of international humanitarian law and human rights law, as well as American law and policy."

He pointed out that the International Court of Justice "decided that it is reasonable to see that Israeli forces used American weapons to violate international humanitarian law."

He added: "President Biden must end the United States' complicity with the government of Israel in serious violations of international law."

He continued: "Biden must immediately suspend arms transfers to the Israeli government."

He pointed out that if Biden continues arms transfers to Israel, “this could lead to a greater catastrophe and the death of innocent people.”

He explained that the US government and its companies are "responsible for putting the lives of thousands of civilians in Palestine at risk every day."
