Majdalani told Al-Quds that forming a consensus government to manage the sector is the first step to implementing the agreement
The Secretary-General of the Popular Struggle Front, Dr. Ahmed Majdalani, said in an interview with “Al Quds”, “The consensus achieved in Beijing will have an impact on Palestinian national unity, the ability to unify the political position, and unify the national effort in confronting the Israeli occupation, whether in confronting the war of extermination, and the joint effort to stop this aggressive war on our people, and provide relief to our people in the Gaza Strip, or the social situation that has begun to deteriorate in the West Bank as a result of the closure and the high unemployment rate, especially after the workers who work inside the Green Line were unable to reach their work.”
Majdalani pointed out that what has been achieved "will also help in joint preparation for what the next day will be like for the administration of the Gaza Strip through an agreed-upon national consensus government, and this government will exercise its role and powers according to the law in the West Bank, East Jerusalem and the Gaza Strip."
Regarding the next steps to implement this agreement on the ground, Majdalani pointed out that there are issues that can be started, and a timetable and work mechanisms can be set to implement the agreement, stressing that the basis for its success is linked to the availability of political will to implement the agreement and not evade it.
He said: There are issues that, to some extent, require better objective conditions to mature than they are now, especially stopping the war and aggression against our people in the Gaza Strip and the West Bank, so that the National Consensus Government can go to Gaza and exercise its role and powers in full in accordance with the Palestinian Basic Law.
Regarding the Arab and international impact of the agreement, Majdalani said, “The agreement is primarily to unify the Palestinian ranks, and its target is not any Arab or regional country. On the contrary, we believe that our Arab brothers will be extremely happy, just as we are happy with the agreement, and we hope that this agreement and the results it will produce will find all the support and backing from the Arab League and the international community.”
The Secretary-General of the Popular Struggle Front stressed the role of civil society in strengthening this agreement and making it a success, pointing to the important role of civil society, which can play an awareness-raising and monitoring role to expedite the implementation of the agreement, and hold any party seeking to obstruct it responsible for that.
Majdalani pointed out that the most prominent challenge facing the agreement is the occupation, and said, "I believe that the main challenge is the Israeli occupation, which will hinder and obstruct any possibility of translating this agreement into reality, and the Palestinians' failure to end the division and unite under the banner of the Palestine Liberation Organization."
He added: "The Israeli occupation, as we know, is the one that sponsored and encouraged the division, and it is the one that sponsored and encouraged the political division, and it is the one that provided all possible environments for the division to continue and deepen over the past years."
China announced yesterday that Palestinian factions, including Hamas and Fatah, signed an agreement on "ending division and strengthening Palestinian unity," after reconciliation talks hosted by Beijing that included 14 Palestinian factions.
Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi said the agreement was "dedicated to the great reconciliation and unity of all 14 factions."
"The basic conclusion is that the Palestine Liberation Organization is the sole legitimate representative of all the Palestinian people," Wang added, adding that "an agreement has been reached on post-Gaza war governance and the formation of an interim national reconciliation government."
