Borrell: We will discuss steps against Israel after the international justice opinion
The High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policies, Josep Borrell, said that the foreign ministers of the European Union countries will discuss during their meeting in Brussels what can be done outside the framework of talk regarding the situation in Gaza and Palestine, after the advisory opinion of the International Court of Justice, which considered Israel’s occupation of the Palestinian territories illegal. It must be terminated immediately.
Borrell added in a statement before the start of the EU foreign ministers’ meeting in the Belgian capital, Brussels, on Monday, that “the advisory opinion of the International Court of Justice, which clearly expresses the always supported position of the European Union that the occupation of the Palestinian territories and the West Bank is completely illegal and must be ended, is news.” Whatever".
He explained: Although this was an advisory advisory opinion from International Justice, it came from the highest legal body in the United Nations.
Borrell commented on the Israeli Prime Minister and his government’s rejection of the advisory opinion of international justice, saying: “The answer came from the Netanyahu government, and they said: No, this is our land, and there are historical reasons. I say: You can interpret history however you want, but we are talking about international law.”
Netanyahu called for respect for international law, saying: “There is no history on one side and international law on the other. Unfortunately, there was not a wide gap between international law and the reality on the ground as we are in it now.”
He stressed that politics has not found a solution (regarding the situation in Palestine) yet, so the courts came to fill the vacuum formed by politics, stating that the courts do not exist to implement the opinions that must be implemented by the political forces, and “the European Union bears a special responsibility in this regard.” ".
Borrell pointed out that the ministers will discuss in their meeting the consequences of the advisory opinion of international justice and the steps that the European Union will take. He said: “I will discuss again what we can do other than talking, and that we support the International Court of Justice and ask the Israelis not to continue building settlements.”
Borrell stressed that what is happening in Gaza is a man-made humanitarian disaster that has reached unbearable proportions, saying: “There are 17,000 orphans, and nearly 40,000 people have been killed. To rebuild Gaza, 10 years are needed to remove the rubble, and unfortunately, stopping "The shooting proposed by President Joe Biden did not happen and humanitarian support has not yet been provided."
On Friday, the International Court of Justice held a public hearing in The Hague regarding the United Nations General Assembly’s request for the court to issue a fatwa on the legal consequences of Israel’s policies and practices in the occupied Palestinian territory, including East Jerusalem.
The International Court of Justice said that "the continued presence of the State of Israel in the occupied Palestinian territory is illegal," stressing that the Palestinians have the "right to self-determination," and that "the Israeli settlements existing on the occupied territories must be evacuated."
