Tweets, intercession by allies, and perhaps Elon Musk... Netanyahu is trying to mend his relationship with Trump

A report published by the Axios news website revealed that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is working intensively behind the scenes to mend his relationship with former US President Donald Trump.

The report said that Netanyahu's allies spoke with Trump on at least four occasions during the past three years. To try to repair relations that deteriorated, after the Israeli Prime Minister congratulated US President Joe Biden on his victory in the 2020 elections.

One of Netanyahu's allies went so far as to bring a copy of a book written by Netanyahu to Trump's home at his Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida, and read passages in it praising the former US president, according to one of Netanyahu's aides.

The aide told Axios: “But every time we thought we had succeeded, we discovered that Trump was still angry.”

Netanyahu's aides are concerned that relations between the Israeli Prime Minister and Trump will not be close if the latter wins the presidential elections, which will be held next November, just as their relationship was during Trump's time in the White House.

However, aides have suggested that years of efforts by Netanyahu to curry favor with Trump may have shown some progress, in the wake of the attempted assassination of Trump.

After Netanyahu sent Trump a video clip condemning the assassination attempt, which occurred on Saturday, the former president posted the video on the social networking site “Truth Social.”

Netanyahu was one of the first world leaders to issue a statement condemning the attempted assassination of Trump, and followed it up with at least three additional statements and social media posts expressing solidarity.

Netanyahu said, in his video message: “Like all Israelis, my wife Sarah and I were shocked by the horrific assassination attempt on President Donald Trump.”

He stressed that the matter was not just an attack on Trump, but rather an attack on America and democracy, and he wished the former president “continued strength” on behalf of Israel.

Netanyahu's team posted the video online and sent it directly to Trump's team.

One of Netanyahu's aides said that the Israeli prime minister's reference to Trump in the video as "President Trump," and not "former President Trump," was intentional.

In an interview conducted with him in 2021, Trump accused Netanyahu of disloyalty to him for accepting Biden’s victory, instead of supporting his allegations of fraud, “despite everything he did for Israel and Netanyahu personally,” according to what he said at the time.

Trump said: “I haven’t spoken to him since then,” and he uttered an obscenity. An expression of his anger at him.

But despite this, the former US president said that he still loves Netanyahu personally. However, he spoke of other differences between them, saying that the Netanyahu government was not serious about peace with the Palestinians, and did not play an active enough role in the assassination of Iranian General Qassem Soleimani, leaving the United States to bear the risks alone.

Since the start of the Gaza war last October, Trump has expressed public support for Israel, but not for Netanyahu.

A former Trump advisor told Axios that the former president criticized the failures of the Netanyahu government that led to the Hamas attack on Israel on October 7.

However, the advisor said that Trump would be able to work with Netanyahu if he wins the upcoming elections.

For their part, two of Netanyahu's aides said they were optimistic about the possibility of repairing relations between the former president and the Israeli prime minister.

One of them suggested seeking the help of billionaire Elon Musk in this matter. He has a good relationship with Netanyahu, and earlier this week he endorsed Trump for president.

Netanyahu is expected to visit Washington next week. To meet Biden and deliver a speech before Congress.

There is currently no plan to meet Trump during the trip, according to a Netanyahu aide.
