Gallant approves the issuance of preliminary summonses to recruit Haredim

Today, Tuesday, the Israeli Minister of Defense, Yoav Galant, approved the army’s recommendation to issue preliminary conscription summonses to young Haredi candidates for security service, in the coming weeks, which would lead to the fall of Benjamin Netanyahu’s government, as a result of the Haredi parties’ strong opposition to recruiting young men. Their community.

Gallant's approval comes after deliberations with the IDF Chief of Staff, Herzi Halevy, and other officers. A statement issued by Gallant's office said that it was agreed that the summonses would be accompanied by "an information campaign dedicated to the ultra-Orthodox population about military service that is compatible with the ultra-Orthodox."

It was also agreed in the deliberations that “there is a military necessity” for conscription, that there are “complex issues,” and that “the nature of life of Haredi recruits must be preserved and that this should lead to a gradual increase in the number of recruits.”

This step comes at a time when crises are escalating within the government. Today, the head of the coalition, Ofir Katz, stopped voting on all coalition legislation due to the lack of a majority in support of the “rabbis law” proposed by the Shas party, due to the refusal of the Minister of National Security, Itamar Ben Gvir.

The Supreme Court recently issued a unanimous decision by a nine-judge panel stipulating that Haredim must be recruited into the army immediately, otherwise the transfer of budgets to Haredi institutions will be stopped.

Following the court’s decision, Channel 13 quoted a leader in one of the ultra-Orthodox parties as saying that the government may fall next March at the maximum, which is the last date for passing the state budget for next year, and that this would lead to early general elections.

Israeli media indicated that Haredi politicians believe that due to the lack of transfer of budgets to their institutions and the crisis caused by the recruitment of Haredis, they will have no choice but to go to new elections, and the Knesset may be dissolved before the date of voting on the state budget, if Haredi rabbis instruct their parties to withdraw. From the government.

It is noteworthy that Netanyahu is seeking to enact a law that exempts the Haredim from military service, but he faces opposition to such a law within the coalition and within his party as well. The most prominent opponent, in addition to Gallant, is the head of the Foreign Affairs and Security Committee, Yuli Edelstein, whose committee must prepare the law for a vote in the body. General Assembly of the Knesset. Edelstein calls for the law to be approved with the approval of all members of the Foreign Affairs and Security Committee.
