Former American officials denounce American complicity in killing civilians in Gaza
Twelve former officials in the administration of US President Joe Biden, who resigned over policy towards Israel and the Gaza war, said that the government's actions endangered US national security.
They said in a joint statement on Tuesday that these policies led to increased destabilization of the region and made America vulnerable to criticism, isolation, and targeting.
One of these 12 resigned from the US Department of the Interior on Tuesday.
The US State Department has previously denied such allegations, noting its criticism of Israel, its call to reduce the number of civilian casualties in Gaza, and its efforts to enhance humanitarian aid.
“US diplomatic cover for Israel, and the constant flow of weapons to Israel, has ensured our undeniable complicity in the killings and forced starvation of the besieged Palestinian population in Gaza,” the former officials’ joint statement said.
This is not the first statement of its kind by former officials, but it comes in conjunction with the resignation of Maryam Hassanein, the special assistant in the US Department of the Interior who signed the statement.
The former officials accuse the US government of clinging to a “failed policy” that was not only destructive to the Palestinian people, but also endangered Israelis, stifled freedom of expression and undermined US credibility about its commitment to a rules-based international order.
The joint statement says that continued arms transfers to Israel despite its actions in Gaza have led to further destabilization in the Middle East.
The statement read: “Our (American) nation’s political and economic interests across the region have also been significantly harmed, while US credibility has been severely undermined around the world at a time when we need it most, as the world is characterized by a new era of strategic competition.” ".
Other signatories include Josh Paul, who oversaw the State Department's relations with Congress on arms transfers, who resigned on October 18.
A former White House official, two former employees of the Department of the Air Force and a former Army officer at the Defense Intelligence Agency also signed the statement.
For its part, the State Department said it encourages different viewpoints on policy and employees can announce their opposing positions through “appropriate channels.”
A State Department spokesman said in April that the United States “has been clear at the highest levels, publicly and privately, with Israel that it must abide by international humanitarian law.”
The spokesman's comments came shortly after seven current and former US officials told the BBC that President Biden's pressure on Israel after the deadly attack on aid workers was insufficient and would fail to stop the humanitarian crisis in Gaza.
Israel launched its barbaric war on the Gaza Strip following the Hamas movement’s attack on the Gaza Strip on October 7, which claimed the lives of 1,200 Israelis, including 311 soldiers, according to official Israeli data, and 251 others were taken hostage.
At least more than 37,900 Palestinian citizens were killed, most of them women and children, according to the Gaza Ministry of Health.
