American fear of a humanitarian crisis if Israel isolates Palestinian banks

Today, Thursday, US Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen feared the possibility of a “humanitarian crisis” if Israel carried out its threat to isolate Palestinian banks and prevent them from accessing its banking system.

“I am particularly concerned about Israel’s threats to take action that would isolate Palestinian banks from their Israeli correspondence,” Yellen told reporters in Stresa in northern Italy, before a meeting of G7 finance ministers.

The Minister stressed, “These banking channels are necessary to process transactions that enable approximately $8 billion annually in imports from Israel, including electricity, water, fuel, and food, as well as facilitating approximately $2 billion annually in exports on which Palestinian livelihoods depend.” ".

In response to a question about what the United States and the G7 might do in response, Yellen said that she had written to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu months ago about the economic situation in the occupied West Bank.

She added, "As I said, I believe that it will create a humanitarian crisis in due course if Palestinian banks are isolated from Israeli correspondence." “Certainly, that is the opinion we will express.”

According to Yellen, this issue may be discussed in the G7, noting, “I expect other countries to express their concern about the impact of such a decision on the economy of the West Bank.”

She continued: “I think this will have a very negative impact on Israel as well.”

She also reiterated US concerns about Israel blocking funds it raises for the Palestinian Authority, saying it "threatens economic stability in the West Bank."
