Biden renews commitment to Israel's security... and The Independent: complicit in the famine in Gaza
US President Joe Biden confirmed today, Tuesday, in a letter to the head of the Israeli occupation, Isaac Herzog, that the United States’ commitment to “Israel’s security is firm.”
In his message, Biden said that the United States is “proud of its ongoing relationship with Israel.”
In the context of his continued support for the occupation, the British newspaper “The Independent” revealed that Biden has done more than just arm “Israel,” as he is considered complicit in the devastating famine in the Gaza Strip.
In an investigative report, the newspaper spoke about the “mistakes, missed opportunities, and political choices” made by the Biden administration, which allowed famine to take hold in northern Gaza.
Through access to leaked documents, testimony from current and former officials and voices from Gaza, the investigation paints a damning picture of a disaster that was “entirely avoidable,” according to The Independent.
According to the newspaper, interviews conducted with current and former officials at the US Agency for International Development, the US State Department, relief agencies working in Gaza, and internal USAID documents reveal that the US administration “rejected or ignored” appeals to use its influence to persuade its ally, “Israel.” - which receives billions of dollars in military support - by allowing sufficient humanitarian aid to enter Gaza, in order to stop the famine.
It quoted former officials as saying that the United States “also provided diplomatic cover for Israel, in order to create conditions for famine, by obstructing international efforts to cease fire or mitigate the severity of the crisis,” which made the delivery of aid almost impossible.
The officials said that since the first warning signs appeared last December, intense American pressure on “Israel” to open more land crossings and flood Gaza with aid could have “stopped the worsening of the crisis,” but Biden “ He refused to make American military aid to Israel conditional.
Instead, according to the newspaper, the Biden government pursued new and ineffective solutions for aid, such as airdrops and floating docks. Now, about 300,000 people in northern Gaza are suffering from complete starvation.
"Direct collusion"
The Independent quoted the resigned US State Department official, Josh Paul, as saying that what is happening “is not simply turning a blind eye to the man-made starvation of an entire people, but rather it is direct complicity.”
The newspaper pointed out that the level of opposition within the US government agency, which is responsible for managing civilian foreign aid and combating hunger in the world, is “unprecedented,” noting that about 19 internal opposition memorandums have been sent since the beginning of the war by employees of the US Agency for International Development. They criticize American support for the war on Gaza.
In an internal collective dissent memorandum, drafted this month by a large number of USAID staff, they attack the agency and the Biden administration for their “failure to uphold international humanitarian principles and live up to their mandate to save lives.”
The leaked draft memo, which was seen by The Independent, calls on the administration to exert pressure to “end the Israeli blockade that is causing famine.”
