The White House is considering receiving Palestinian refugees from Gaza

US President Joe Biden's administration is considering receiving some Palestinian refugees and granting them permanent safe haven in the United States, CBS News reported on Tuesday.

The report said that officials at several government agencies are examining options for resettlement of Palestinians who have immediate family members who are American citizens or permanent residents. They are also considering offering the option to Palestinians with American relatives.

The number of Palestinians eligible for permanent resettlement in the United States is expected to be relatively small, but the report said this will be the first time that a US refugee program has accepted Palestinians in large numbers.

While the program could provide an escape from Israel's brutal bombing campaign and blockade of Gaza, which has killed more than 34,000 Palestinians, it could also serve Israel's hopes of cleansing the Strip of its Palestinian population.

A leaked document from the Israeli Ministry of Intelligence dating back to October stated that expelling all 2.3 million Palestinians living in Gaza to Egypt would be the best scenario for Israel, and Israeli ministers and members of the Knesset did not hesitate to express their desire to re-establish Jewish settlements in the devastated Strip.

Israeli officials also called on Western countries to receive Palestinian refugees.

In a Wall Street Journal op-ed, two members of Israel's Knesset said one option was for "countries around the world to accept limited numbers of Gaza families who have expressed a desire to move elsewhere."

Israeli Intelligence Minister Gila Gamliel said that one of the options available to Gaza is to "encourage the voluntary resettlement of Palestinians in Gaza, for humanitarian reasons, outside the Strip." Meanwhile, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said publicly that he is looking for countries to “absorb” the Palestinians.

Israeli officials classify the potential expulsion of Palestinians as “voluntary resettlement,” but Israel’s bombing campaign and blockade of Gaza has rendered much of the Strip uninhabitable, and could give Palestinians no choice but to leave if given the opportunity.
