Resignation of US State Department spokeswoman Hala Gharit

The Arabic-speaking spokeswoman for the US State Department, Hala Gharit, submitted her resignation in objection to Washington’s policy towards the Israeli war on the Gaza Strip, making it at least the third resignation in the ministry due to this issue.

The Ministry's website showed that Hala was also Deputy Director of the Regional Media Center in Dubai, and joined the Ministry of Foreign Affairs about two decades ago as a political and human rights official.

Hala wrote on the social networking site (LinkedIn): “I resigned in April 2024 after 18 years of distinguished service, in protest against the US policy in Gaza.”

When asked about the resignation in a press conference on Thursday, a spokesman for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said that the ministry has channels for its employees to exchange views when they do not agree with government policies.

About a month before that, Anil Shelin of the State Department's Human Rights Office announced her resignation, and State Department official Josh Paul also resigned last October.

Senior US Department of Education official Tariq Habash, an American of Palestinian origin, resigned from his position last January for the same reasons.

The United States has been subjected to increasing international criticism by human rights groups, due to its support for Israel in its ongoing war on the Gaza Strip for more than six months, which led to the martyrdom of more than 34,000 citizens, most of them women and children, and caused a humanitarian crisis.

Reuters said that there were reports of signs of discord in President Joe Biden's administration as war casualties continued to increase. Last November, more than a thousand officials at the US Agency for International Development, affiliated with the State Department, signed an open letter calling for... Immediate ceasefire.

Telegrams criticizing the administration's policy were sent to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs' internal "opposition channel."

Since the outbreak of the aggression on Gaza, the United States has witnessed widespread demonstrations in support of the Palestinians and the Palestinian cause, and demanding an end to the crimes of genocide against them. These demonstrations have escalated in recent days to students setting up sit-in tents and protests at 33 American universities.
