Iranian newspaper: Negotiations between Tehran and Washington regarding Gaza and the nuclear agreement
In the midst of recent tensions, signs of diplomatic movement began to appear between Tehran and Washington regarding the issues of disagreement between them, most notably the negotiations aimed at reviving the nuclear agreement as well as the war on Gaza.
Today, Sunday, the Iranian Shargh newspaper revealed discussions taking place in New York between the Iranian Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Saeed Irani, and American officials.
These discussions come at a time when the region is witnessing great tension that has escalated with the start of the war on Gaza, the announcement of armed factions linked to Tehran in Iraq and Syria targeting American interests in the region, the Iranian-backed Houthis launching attacks on ships in the Red Sea, and finally Iran and Israel exchanging direct and public bombing. Fears are rising that the United States will slide into a direct confrontation with Tehran.
According to what “Sharq” indicates, citing sources it described as informed, the discussions discuss a range of various files with the centrality of the Gaza crisis, noting that they also include examining ways to revive the nuclear agreement, stressing that the nuclear discussions are no longer being followed only by the chief Iranian negotiator, Ali Bagheri Kani. Indeed, the Iranian delegate to the United Nations is also following the file.
The nuclear agreement concluded in 2015 has been reeling since 2018 after Washington withdrew from it by decision of former President Donald Trump. His successor, Joe Biden, sought to revive this agreement, through negotiations held in Vienna, but they have stopped since the summer of 2022.
