Israel - Iran: And Netanyahu comes across as the victim again...

By striking an Iranian consulate in Damascus on April 1, the Israeli authorities knew full well that Iran was going to retaliate. For Tehran, it is at least a matter of trying to re-establish a form of deterrence, but also of preserving its image vis-à-vis its relays and supporters in the region, by presenting itself in action.

In fact, the Iranian response, which several analysts describe as modest, was symbolic: the operation was warned in advance and several military forces present in the region were able to organize themselves to intercept Iranian drones and missiles.

In an article published in the center-right Israeli media Maariv, an academic even suggests that the Iranian operation was "destined to fail [...] synchronized and organized in detail with the Americans". Well-informed Israeli journalist Barak Ravid claims that war cabinet representatives from the supposedly democratic and liberal camp, embodied by Gantz and Eisenkot, pushed for a bombing of Iran even before the drones arrived on Israeli soil.

Proposal rejected by Netanyahu, taking into account the US refusal to follow Israel in a war against Iran. This reminds us, if necessary, that Gantz and his camp are no less hawkish, and just as guilty of the crimes committed against the Palestinians. Israeli communication in the face of this “façade” response is exploited by Netanyahu, who has succeeded perfectly in his bet: he can present himself both as a victim of a theocratic and Islamist regime, and as defender of a besieged citadel with democratic pretensions. widely criticized... This even though he embodies the most bellicose, extremist and supremacist government in the history of Israel.

Domestically, Netanyahu achieved two significant successes. For the first time since 7/10, he offers the Israelis "an image of victory", with a defense operation that his government presents as heroic, while in Gaza neither of the two objectives, the destruction of Hamas and the liberation hostages, was not reached. The fear created by Iran's announced response caused significant panic within Israeli society, weakening the protest against the government which had become increasingly significant since March .

Internationally, Netanyahu's government manages to turn global public opinion around, supporting Israel less and less, and to benefit from unconditional support from the West. In doing so, attention is focused on the Israelis and away from Gaza and the West Bank, where for several months thousands of settlers have been sowing terror, supported by the Israeli army and certain ministers. Violence which has increased tenfold in recent days after the death of a 14-year-old settler.

France thus considered it right to summon the Iranian ambassador, even though that of Israel has never suffered the slightest reprimand after six months of a criminal and genocidal war.

Thus, the security of Israel is considered a priority over respect for international law, the security of the Palestinians and the lives of the inhabitants of the Gaza Strip. The permanent ceasefire is the preliminary and essential step to avoid a regional war.
