David Hirst: For the first time, the Arab army fights in defense of “Israel”
British journalist David Hirst, editor-in-chief of the Middle East Eye website, said that the Iranian attack on the Israeli occupation revealed for the first time “an Arab army fighting alongside Israel.”
Hearst explained in an article in Middle East Eye, "The most stupid thing that Israeli security sources did on Sunday was to brag publicly about the cooperation they received from the Jordanian Air Force, which helped them shoot down drones and cruise missiles."
Israeli sources boasted that missiles heading to Jerusalem were intercepted on the Jordanian side of the Jordan Valley, and others near the Syrian border.
Hirst continued, "The message that Israel wanted to convey is that, despite the apparent matter, Israel has allies in the region who are ready to defend it."
Hirst commented: “But this is a foolish game if Israel wants to preserve the weak Jordanian monarchy and fight the trend of public opinion that wants to storm the border.”
He explained: "Jordan may have been two-faced in the past, and King Hussein passed intelligence information to his cigar-smoking friend, the late former Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin."
He added: "But this is the first time I remember that the Jordanian army, which still bears its original name since the time of liberation from the Ottoman Empire as the 'Arab Army', actually joined the fight to protect Israel's borders, and this is a big mistake."
Hirst spoke about the discrepancy in the popular and official positions, saying that "while the residents of Jordan, whether Palestinians or Jordanians from the East Bank, were cheering for those missiles and hoping that they would reach their goals, the Jordanian army shot them down on behalf of Israel."
Hirst said, "Israel only establishes relations with Arab leaders who defy the will of their people and impose their corrupt rule on them. The Jordanian move on Saturday may give Israel success in the short term, but in the long term it causes problems along Israel's borders."
Hirst concluded that the Israeli occupation may celebrate the fact that it has real allies, “but in doing so it fatally undermines the legitimacy of its friends.”
It is noteworthy that Jordan participated publicly in repelling the first Iranian attacks of its kind on the Israeli occupation, while Israeli newspapers reported that Amman also allowed Tel Aviv to use its airspace to repel Iranian missiles and drones.
