Washington: The Security Council’s resolution to cease fire in Gaza is non-binding

The official spokesman for the US State Department, Matthew Miller, said on Monday that the UN Security Council’s ceasefire resolution, which calls for a ceasefire and the release of detainees, is not binding.


In response to a question from Al-Quds.com's correspondent in Washington, Miller said whether he saw a practical future for Monday's resolution in the Security Council, or at least as a step towards adopting a binding resolution, that he did not want to speculate about these matters, suggesting a return to Safira's comment. The United States in the Security Council, Lena Linda Thomas Green, regarding the non-binding resolution of the resolution, but he pointed to the multiple efforts to reach an agreement between Israel and Hamas in the Qatar negotiations, expressing his hope that the negotiations will lead to an agreement.


On Monday, the Security Council adopted its first resolution for an “immediate ceasefire” in Gaza, more than 5 and a half months after the Israeli war on Gaza.


The United States was the only vote that abstained, while the other 14 members voted in favor of the resolution, which was proposed by the 10 non-permanent members of the Council, allowing the resolution to pass.


The resolution calls for an immediate ceasefire during the month of Ramadan, which began two weeks ago, provided that it “leads to a permanent ceasefire.” It also calls for the immediate and unconditional release of all hostages.
