An Israeli writer mocked the defense of the lawyers appointed by Israel to defend it at the International Court of Justice in The Hague against the charge of genocide brought by South Africa.

Writer Gideon Levy said in Haaretz: “What name can the mass killing that continues indiscriminately and uncontrollably, with dimensions that are difficult to imagine (in Gaza) be called? How can we name a situation in which children are dying on the ground in hospitals, where many of them have no life left?” Does anyone in the world, the starving elderly, flee to escape from the horror of the bombing that does not stop anywhere? Do the 2.3 million people, most of whom are destitute and homeless refugees, hungry, thirsty, sick, disabled and injured, care if what happened is called genocide or not? Will this legal definition change their fate?

He added: "In Israel, they will breathe a sigh of relief if the court rejects this lawsuit, and for them, if this is not considered genocide, our consciences will be at ease again. If they say in The Hague that this is not genocide, then once again we will become the most moral in the world."

Levy attacked the Israeli media, and considered that it had deteriorated to an unprecedented low in this war, especially during its coverage of the International Tribunal.

Regarding the pleadings in court, Levy said that when he heard Israel’s lawyers say that only Hamas is guilty, and that Israel has no role or part in that, he added, “To say this to a very high-ranking international institution means questioning the intelligence of its judges and insulting them.”

He continued to say: “What can be done with the statements of the head of the Israeli defense staff, Professor Malcolm Shaw, who said that “Israel’s actions are balanced, and are directed only against armed forces”? Perhaps the fact that Shaw is not Israeli is the source of this conclusion; and perhaps that is what they told him in The Israeli army spokesman’s office, but the truth is, what will it be about? Adding: If this is balance, what will imbalance look like? Hiroshima?
