Former Israeli General: Our soldiers are drowning in the mud of Gaza

A former general in the Israeli occupation army considered that achieving the goals of the war on Gaza was moving away from its path, noting that the soldiers were drowning more and more in the mud of Gaza.

Reserve General Yitzhak Brick said in the Israeli newspaper Maariv on Monday: “With the passage of time, we are moving further and further away from achieving the goals of the war in eliminating Hamas and releasing the kidnapped, and we are sinking deeper and deeper into the mud of Gaza.”

Brik considered that the failure to eliminate Hamas rule in Rafah and the failure to control the tunnels underneath it, which are considered the main passage for weapons from Sinai to the Gaza Strip, means the army’s failure to achieve the basic mission it set in the war, which is: overthrowing Hamas rule.

The former army general added that Hamas members in Rafah enjoy freedom of access to Khan Yunis and the northern Gaza Strip through hundreds of kilometers of tunnels linked to each other, despite the destruction of a large part of them.

He continued: “Hence, the continuation of the army’s fighting in the current form in Khan Yunis, and in the neighborhoods and cities in the central Gaza Strip, does not add to the achievement of the war’s objectives, and the opposite is true. This fighting inflicts on us heavy losses every day from the explosives and traps they plant for us and the anti-tank missiles that they plant.” Shoot us.

Brik considered that the continuation of the war in this way was like a useless nightmare, calling on the political and military leaders to change their plans, leave the residential areas, and rely on the air attack to destroy Hamas’ structure.

He added: "It is true that we have not achieved all our wishes of eliminating Hamas from its capabilities, but we will be able to continue controlling the region with much less losses, and we will prevent Hamas from reorganizing its ranks."

The occupation army general saw that “members of the government from the extreme right declare day and night that the fighting inside the Gaza Strip must continue with all its strength until Hamas is defeated, while they ignore the facts on the ground and live a false reality,” pointing out that some ministers and members of the Knesset understand that eliminating Hamas is unrealistic goal, but they do not express their opinions for fear of being accused of harming the fighting spirit of the fighters.

He said: "The radical wing of the coalition is in no way prepared to hold a governmental discussion the day after the war, for fear of making a decision that would allow the entry of an international administration to manage Gaza. According to their approach, large army forces will continue to remain in the densely populated areas of the Gaza Strip for years." "We will face a guerrilla war with Hamas, which will continue to confront us with booby traps and fire anti-tank missiles at our forces, causing us heavy losses."
