Borrell: The Palestinian Authority has never left Gaza and will need help in a transitional period
European Union foreign policy official Josep Borrell stressed today, Sunday, that political investments must be considered, including building a Palestinian state and working to live in peace with the Palestinians and Israel.
This came in a press question during a conference held with Qatari Foreign Minister Mohammed Abdul Rahman Al Thani in the capital, Doha.
Borrell said that a political settlement must be found regarding what is happening in the Gaza Strip, stressing that the only party capable of managing the Gaza Strip and providing services is the Palestinian Authority, indicating its readiness for that.
He stressed that the Palestinian Authority has never left Gaza by providing services, hospitals, schools, and paying salaries to tens of thousands of employees, with support from the European Union.
He added that the Palestinian Authority will need help, "perhaps in a transitional period there will be a need for the Palestinian Authority to support you. Who should take over in Gaza is the Authority."
Borrell is on a tour in the Middle East that includes Palestine, Israel, Bahrain, and Qatar, and will also head to the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan.
He said that the European Union called for immediate humanitarian action, an end to the suffering of civilians in Gaza, and the adoption of the Malta Project resolution, which the Security Council voted on, but unfortunately this resolution has not been implemented yet.
