Israeli radio "Kan"| Israel to the Americans: We agree to deploy an international force in Gaza
The official Israeli radio "Kan" reported Thursday morning that US President Joe Biden's envoy for Middle East affairs, Brett McGurk, met yesterday, Wednesday, with senior Israeli officials in light of the war on Gaza, and discussed with them the issue of Gaza's future after the war.
Israel expressed its initial approval to deploy an international force in the Gaza Strip, in order to control the Strip after the end of the war. This approval came during discussions held by US President Joe Biden’s envoy, Brett McGurk, in Tel Aviv with many Israeli officials.
Israeli Radio reported that two Israeli sources familiar with the details of the meeting said that the Israeli and American sides proposed deploying an international force in Gaza after the end of the war.
According to the sources, the Israeli officials who were met by the US President’s envoy expressed their approval of this idea of deploying and controlling an international force over the Gaza Strip, and stressed that the Palestinian Authority, in its current state, cannot control the Strip.
Brett McGurk asked the Israeli side for clarification regarding Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s statement that Israel would have security control over the Gaza Strip, as it was made clear that this would be similar to Israeli security control over the West Bank.
Israeli officials confirmed to the American envoy that Israel does not intend to govern the Gaza Strip civilianly, or return the settlements to Gush Katif.
The Politico website reported on Wednesday that Germany had proposed that the United Nations be the responsible party in the Gaza Strip at the end of the war.
In the documents revealed to the website, since October 21, five possible scenarios have been proposed for controlling the Strip after the war, including the Israeli occupation, its management by the Palestinian Authority, its management by Egypt, or Imposing responsibility in the region on the United Nations.
The proposal included the United Nations taking control of the Strip and establishing regional partnerships to enable Gaza to become self-reliant and self-administered by the Palestinian leadership. The United Nations scenario was presented as a scenario that could constitute a political solution, while other scenarios are not really desired by all parties, according to Israeli Radio.
In addition to what was described as the “positives” of the scenario of deploying UN forces, the disadvantages of the UN scenario were also presented, which will require significant political and economic investment, and increased participation of the United Nations and the international community in this issue.
Diplomatic sources indicate that the German proposal, which was reportedly put forward at a relatively early stage of the war on Gaza, before the start of the ground maneuver in the Strip, did not gain support or progress at the political level, and was even opposed by Palestinian parties in Europe.
An American official said that the Netanyahu government wants to bulldoze northern Gaza and create a security buffer zone, which means annexing Palestinian lands.
NBC quoted the American official as saying, “The Netanyahu government wants to bulldoze northern Gaza and create a security buffer zone, which means annexing Palestinian lands, and we oppose the annexation, deduction, or reduction of lands in Gaza.”
The Amirican official indicated that disputes are escalating with the Netanyahu government, which is not doing what is required to avoid the killing of civilians.
He stressed that Washington rejects the idea of a buffer zone in Gaza and opposes any plan that would undermine the two-state solution, and it still has influence over the Netanyahu government, but time is running out, he said.
