Israeli military analyst: Hamas's defeat is still far away
Israeli military analyst Amos Harel said that the "surrender" of Hamas in the face of the ongoing ground invasion of the Gaza Strip is not imminent at all.
In an article published by Haaretz newspaper - today, Tuesday - Harel referred to intense battles in Gaza and deaths among the ranks of the Israeli army.
He also said that Israel is still far from defeating Hamas, adding that the leader of this movement inside the country, Yahya Sinwar, has no intention of issuing orders to his men to stop the fighting.
Despite his acknowledgment that the Israeli army is suffering losses and that Hamas' "surrender" is not imminent, the Israeli military analyst considered that the force used by the army by deploying three combat teams in Gaza and the massive destruction it is causing is bearing fruit.
Harel pointed out that the Israeli army sometimes faced fierce resistance from Hamas fighters, but he considered that they were having difficulty withstanding the Israeli military pressure in the western part of Gaza City and its northern suburbs.
He said that Hamas would seek to conclude prisoner exchange deals, presenting them as a strategic victory.
According to the Israeli analyst, this time the army obtained approval for a major ground operation despite politicians’ fears of failure and losses.
Regarding the emergence of international pressure on Israel to stop the war, he stated that the Israeli officers in Gaza believe that “the operation should end only after the defeat of Hamas.”
Regarding the destruction caused by the Israeli invasion, Harel said that removing its effects could take years.
