A human rights association has issued strong warnings about a rapid and dangerous deterioration in the health condition of Palestinian doctor Hussam Abu Safiya, who is detained in Israeli occupation prisons. Sources clarified that the doctor faces an imminent danger threatening his life after being recently transferred to the underground interrogation section in Ramla Prison, where these cells lack the most basic human and health necessities.
According to the testimony of the defense lawyer who was able to visit him two days ago, Abu Safiya's body showed clear signs of brutal torture, including bruises and severe injuries to the head, around the eyes, ears, and neck. The lawyer stated that his client appeared in a state of extreme exhaustion and general weakness, as he found it very difficult to breathe or continue speaking fluently as a result of the abuse he was subjected to.
The lawyer conveyed from the captive doctor details of a brutal assault he was subjected to inside his cell, where between four and five jailers severely beat him all over his body without regard for his health condition. These assaults come under harsh detention conditions, where the doctor remains constantly handcuffed and shackled, and is deprived of access to potable water or sufficient food that meets his human needs.
Medical and legal reports indicate that Abu Safiya suffers from previous chronic diseases including heart problems and high blood pressure, conditions that require regular and continuous medical care which he completely lacks inside prison. Sources also confirmed that he contracted scabies due to lack of hygiene and poor detention conditions, in addition to losing about 25 kilograms of his weight since his arrest due to the systematic starvation policy.
For its part, Dr. Abu Safiya's family held the occupation authorities and the prison service administration fully responsible for any harm that might befall him, describing his solitary confinement as a dangerous escalation and a retaliatory punitive measure. The family considered that what their son is being subjected to is an attempt to physically liquidate him through deliberate medical neglect and continuous physical torture amidst an international silence regarding the occupation's crimes against medical personnel.
On the international level, UN and human rights organizations, including the World Health Organization and the International Committee of the Red Cross, renewed their calls for immediate intervention to ensure the safety of the Palestinian doctor and provide him with the necessary treatment. These organizations stressed the need for the occupation authorities to adhere to international laws that protect prisoners and detainees, especially medical personnel who must enjoy special protection according to the Geneva Conventions.
Abu Safiya suffers from recent and dangerous injuries and bruises to the head and around the eyes, and appeared in a state of extreme weakness that makes him unable to breathe or speak normally.
