The Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs of Qatar, Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani, expressed Qatar's welcome for the continuation of the ongoing round of talks between the United States of America and the Islamic Republic of Iran in Switzerland. He affirmed in an official statement that Doha hopes these diplomatic efforts will form a fundamental pillar for reaching a comprehensive agreement that puts an end to existing conflicts and strengthens the foundations of stability and security in the region.
The Qatari Prime Minister stressed the importance of the Lucerne Lake Summit and the discussions that began today, Sunday, indicating his country's aspiration to build on what will be achieved in these sessions. These Qatari moves come within Doha's continuous endeavor to bridge views between international parties and address thorny issues through diplomatic channels and direct dialogue.
In a related context, a new round of direct negotiations began in the Swiss resort of Bürgenstock under the umbrella of the 'Islamabad Understanding'. This negotiating framework primarily aims to end direct and indirect military confrontations between Tehran and Washington, in addition to finding radical solutions to the outstanding issues that have caused an escalation of tension during the past period.
Despite the diplomatic atmosphere, a state of tension loomed over the negotiation hall following statements made by US President Donald Trump, in which he demanded that Tehran curb its allies in Lebanon. Trump warned that the United States is prepared to launch harsher military strikes against Iranian targets if the escalation continues, casting a shadow of doubt over the possibility of achieving a quick breakthrough in the crisis.
News conflicted about the continuation of the sessions, as media sources stated that the Iranian delegation withdrew from the talks after about 80 minutes of discussions in protest of the American tone. However, informed diplomatic sources later denied the cessation of dialogue, confirming that Iranian negotiators are still involved in the negotiation process, and that international mediators have not received any official notification of withdrawal.
For his part, the Iranian response came quickly from the Speaker of the Shura Council and chief negotiator, Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, who affirmed the readiness of the Iranian armed forces to deal with any external threats. Ghalibaf stressed that Tehran will not succumb to the policy of maximum pressure and will not retreat from its principled positions under the weight of military threats brandished by the US administration.
Informed sources reported that the first round of discussions focused intensively on the mechanisms for implementing the provisions of the 'Islamabad Understanding' and discussing field developments in Lebanon, without addressing the nuclear file at this stage. The fate of the upcoming sessions remains shrouded in mystery, as mediators await an evaluation of the results of the first day to determine the chances of continuing the dialogue in light of the sharp tensions between the two parties.
We look forward to these efforts paving the way for a final agreement that ends the war and enhances stability in the region.
