13 US senators call for a “short halt” to the war in Gaza
Democratic members of the US Senate called in a statement, on Friday, for “a short-term cessation of hostilities that pose a significant risk to civilians, relief workers, or the delivery of humanitarian aid in Gaza.”
The 13 senators stated in a statement issued by the office of Massachusetts Senator Ed Markey that, “As senators, we are closely monitoring the war in Gaza and believe that more must be done to protect civilian lives,” according to what was reported by CNN. ".
The senators stressed that Israel has the right to defend itself against Hamas, but stressed that it must "minimize harm to civilians and allow humanitarian aid to reach those suffering."
According to the statement, the members hope to achieve “three goals through a short-term cessation of hostilities,” namely: “successfully delivering the necessary humanitarian aid to civilians under strict and necessary supervision, additional focus on the release of all kidnapped hostages, and providing an opportunity for a broader discussion among the leadership.” Israeli and Palestinian governments, together with regional and global partners, on long-term strategies to reduce the decades-long conflict in the region.
The statement coincides with the arrival of US Secretary of State, Anthony Blinken, in Israel, on Friday, to pressure the Israeli government regarding its ongoing attack on Gaza.
US President Joe Biden and his senior advisors warned Israel that it will become increasingly difficult for it to pursue its military goals in Gaza as global anger intensifies over the extent of human suffering there, according to what CNN reported Thursday.
The network reported, on Thursday, that “there is an American warning to Israeli officials that time is running out before support erodes,” in the continuation of the intense bombing of Gaza, which has claimed the lives of more than 9,000 people, most of them civilians.
The report stated, “US President Joe Biden and his senior advisors are increasingly warning Israel that “it will become difficult for it to achieve its military goals in Gaza, as global anger intensifies over the scale of human suffering in the Strip.”
