The death toll from Hurricane Otis rose to 48 on Sunday, days after it struck Mexico's Pacific coast, according to the Mexican government.

Most of the victims are believed to have died by drowning. Authorities said on Sunday that six people were still missing.

Hurricane Otis struck the coast last Tuesday evening, as a very dangerous Category 5 hurricane, with sustained wind speeds reaching about 270 kilometers per hour, and the speed of the cyclone accompanying it reached 330 kilometers per hour. Then it lost its power on Earth and eventually faded away.

Within just 12 hours, it developed from a tropical storm into a dangerous hurricane, then lost strength and dissipated after reaching land. More than 270,000 apartments and homes were damaged due to the hurricane. In addition, 80% of all hotels in the region that depend on tourism were damaged.

Meanwhile, the armed forces distributed relief supplies in the coastal resort of Acapulco. The Ministry of Defense stated that soldiers brought quantities of food and drinking water to the most affected neighborhoods. The army transported 40 tons of aid by air to the stricken area, and the Red Cross delivered another 75 tons.
