US releases $75 million to fund UNRWA
US President Joe Biden used his executive powers granted to him by the US Constitution to lift the reservation of $75 million that had been reserved by an American congressman as aid to fund the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestinian Refugees.
US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken announced that he would provide the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) with $75 million that Congress had allocated as assistance to Palestinian refugees in the West Bank and Gaza Strip.
The US State Department's decision came as a result of an intense campaign that lasted for three years in the United States to demand that members of Congress release allocations that the US administration had committed to the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees.
Wisconsin Congressman Andre Carson led a campaign to collect signatures of members of Congress on a letter addressed to Congressmen Jim Risch, from Idaho, and Chip Roy, from Texas, asking them to lift a ban they put in place to prevent the delivery of $75 million, which is part of donations allocated by the US administration. To finance the programs of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees.
