Netanyahu discusses potential Saudi deal with Erdogan

Last night, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu met with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan in New York, on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly meetings.

The meeting came a day after Erdogan told reporters he supported the Biden administration’s initiative to broker an Israeli-Saudi deal, saying it would lower tensions in the region.

According to the Hebrew website Ynet, this is the first ever meeting held between the two sides, as it lasted for an hour in the presence of personalities from both sides.

The two sides discussed strengthening bilateral relations in the fields of trade, economy, energy, and regional and international issues, including normalization between Israel and Saudi Arabia.

Netanyahu said at the beginning of the meeting that "relations are strengthening," and thanked Erdogan for "the fruitful cooperation between the security services, which thwarted the malicious intentions of terrorist groups and their attempts to harm Israeli tourists in Istanbul and saved their lives." like he said.

The two sides exchanged invitations to visit Ankara and Tel Aviv, and agreed to coordinate between them soon.

At the end of the meeting, Erdogan's office said that he discussed with Netanyahu "political, economic and regional issues, including the Israeli-Palestinian issue," which Netanyahu's office did not talk about.
