A new storm in "Israel" due to "judicial reforms"
The crisis of "judicial reforms" led by Benjamin Netanyahu's government continues to stir up crises inside and outside "Israel".
Last night, US Vice President Kamala Harris touched on the issue during her speech at a ceremony held in Washington, marking the anniversary of "Israel's independence" (the Palestinian Nakba), when she said that the United States would continue to work for the values that underlie its relations with Israel, and on top of that Promote democracy, an independent judicial system, and checks and balances. According to her saying.
Harris spoke these words in the presence of the Chairman of the Constitution Committee, Member of Knesset Simha Rotman, who leads these reforms and defends them strongly, and who entered into an argument with an employee at the embassy who informed him that he was not invited to celebrate, only to find out later that he was invited at the last moments.
Commenting on Harris's statements, Israeli Foreign Minister Eli Cohen said, "If you ask her what bothers her about judicial reforms, she will not know how to tell us about that.. I do not know if she has read the law or not, and my estimate is that she has not."
Cohen's statements sparked a storm and anger, especially from the US ambassador to Israel, Thomas Naides, who defended Harris's words and described them as confirmation of the friendship of Washington and Tel Aviv.
Cohen was forced to issue a statement in both Hebrew and English, in which he said: "I have great respect for our ally the United States, and for Vice President Harris, who is a great friend of Israel... Judicial reforms, an internal Israeli issue in the process of negotiation, and Israel will remain democratic and liberal as it has always been."
In a related context, the Minister of Environmental Protection, Idit Silman, was forced to leave a conference of the Yedioth Ahronoth newspaper on climate and the environment due to the protests of the opposition to judicial reforms, amid chanting slogans from the protesters at the conference, "Resign and go home."
