Biden says he will announce his re-election plans "soon"
The period of anticipation ended, and US President Joe Biden announced on Tuesday his candidacy for a second term, despite the concerns that his age, eighty years, raises.
"I am running for a second term," Biden said in a video posted on Twitter.
The Republican Party quickly accused him of "detachment from reality."
For a week now, rumors have been circulating in Washington about this candidacy.
Today, Tuesday, April 25, coincides with the fourth anniversary of Democrat Joe Biden entering the previous presidential election campaign under the slogan "For the Spirit of America", at the end of which Donald Trump was denied a second term.
If opinion polls are correct, another contest between the two men is on the horizon. The announcement of the candidacy on this date bears strong symbolism.
There is no campaign-related event on Biden's agenda for the day.
The president is supposed to speak before a union to lay out his vision on what will surely be one of the main tenets of his campaign: how to bring "industrial jobs" back to the United States and "rebuild the middle class."
Since the beginning of the year, Biden has stressed his desire to restore "dignity" to the "forgotten" popular America that Donald Trump knew how to win over.
Biden believes that the statistics are on his side, as American presidents generally run and are often re-elected.
But the 80-year-old president defies historical precedent. If re-elected, he will end his second term at the age of 86.
In November 2021 and February 2023, the President underwent medical examinations which concluded that he was "in good health".
However, it is expected that the Democratic president, who is blamed for his many lapses, will be exposed to the escalation of Republican attacks on his mental ability.
However, he shows extraordinary resilience, from international crises to major reforms.
His visit to Kiev, an unprecedented initiative accompanied by tight security measures, reminded him of his role as the architect of the Western response after Russia's invasion of Ukraine.
Joe Biden took note, according to the polls, that the candidacy of his predecessor, Donald Trump, 76, who was indicted by a court in New York, no longer aroused enthusiasm either.
The Democrat thus considers that if he defeated his Republican predecessor, the divisive figure, once, he could do so again by emphasizing his character as a good man and his unifying platform.
Anticipating the announcement of his rival, Donald Trump Monday deplored the outcome of the current president's performance.
"You can take the five worst presidents in the history of the United States, and together they will not cause more damage than Joe Biden did to our country in just a few years," the Republican billionaire said in a statement.
And there remains a big question mark about what will be Joe Biden's chances if in November 2024 he faces a younger opponent or competition?
The name of Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, the 44-year-old far-right figure, is being circulated heavily. He has not announced his candidacy yet.
This will be Biden's fourth presidential race. Before he was elected in 2020, he ran for the 1998 and 2008 elections, and each time I suffered a severe defeat. In 2015, Biden, who was vice president at the time, and was deeply affected by the death of his eldest son, declined to run to succeed Barack Obama.
