US House Speaker McCarthy delivers a speech in the Israeli Knesset
US House of Representatives Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) said on Tuesday that he will deliver a speech to a full session of the Israeli Knesset during his upcoming visit to Israel on the occasion of the 75th anniversary of the Palestinian Nakba and the establishment of Israel.
McCarthy, known for his close relations with the Israeli lobby, AIPAC, said in a tweet on Tuesday, "My first trip abroad (a foreign country) as Speaker (House of Representatives) will be to return to Israel to celebrate the 75th anniversary of the establishment of the state. The relationship between the United States and Israel is as important as any Ever since, I am proud to have accepted an invitation from @AmirOhana, Speaker of the Knesset, to become the second [US Speaker of the House of Representatives] in history to address the Knesset.”
McCarthy, who became speaker of the US House of Representatives last January after the Republicans won a narrow majority in the November midterm elections last year, is the first speaker of the US House of Representatives to address the Knesset in 25 years. Axios revealed that the leader of the Democratic minority in the House of Representatives, Hakeem Jeffries (Democrat from New York), who is also known for his solid relationship with the Israeli lobby AIPAC, will travel to Israel several days before McCarthy's visit.
