Democrats are pressuring Biden to review US policy towards Israel

US President Joe Biden is facing pressure from members of his party to change US policy towards Israel, and to open an investigation into the policies of its new far-right government, according to Haaretz newspaper.

The newspaper said that fourteen members of the Democratic Party sent a letter to the administration of US President Joe Biden urging him to make a foundational shift in the administration's approach to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, "in the most progressive message so far against the Israeli government since Benjamin Netanyahu's far-right coalition took power." According to the Israeli newspaper Haaretz.

The letter, which was initiated by Representative Jamal Bowman (D-New York) and Senator Bernie Sanders (Independent from Vermont), urges US President Joe Biden and Secretary of State Anthony Blinken to "make a shift in US policy in recognition of the exacerbation of violence, the annexation of more lands, And denying Palestinians rights. Only by protecting democracy, human rights, and self-determination for all Palestinians and Israelis can we achieve lasting peace.”

The letter, which was originally launched on March 28, was signed by Representative Cory Bush (Democrat from Missouri), Andre Carson (from Indiana), Representative Summer Lee (Democrat from Pennsylvania), Representative Betty McCollum (from Minnesota), and Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY), Rep. Ilhan Omar (R-Minnesota), Rep. Ayanna Pressley (R-Massachusetts), Rep. Rashida Tlaib (R-Michigan), Raul Gregalfam (R-Arizona), Rep. Bonnie Watson Coleman (D- New Jersey), Rep. Jesús "Choy" Garcia (Illinois) and Rep. Delia Ramirez (R-Illinois).

In their letter, the progressive lawmakers urged the Biden administration to ensure that US taxpayer money does not support Israeli settlement projects, and to determine whether US military assistance violates the Arms Export Control Act or the so-called "Leahy Act" relative to former Senator Patrick Leahy of Vermont. which requires the export and monitoring of US weapons to ensure they are sold only for legitimate self-defense, and prohibits the use of US funding to equip or train foreign military forces suspected of human rights abuses or war crimes.

"We call on your administration to ensure that future foreign assistance to Israel, including weapons and equipment, is not used to support gross violations of human rights, including by strengthening end-use monitoring and financial tracking," the letter to the administration says. "We ask that you respond with a detailed plan of how the administration plans to achieve this goal," the letter says.

The lawmakers affirmed that they are “deeply concerned by the Israeli government’s moves that show that the illegal de facto and de jure annexation of the occupied West Bank is well under way,” stressing that “the Israeli government’s anti-democratic mission to dismantle the rule of law is a threatening mission to Israelis and Palestinians alike.” .

And the newspaper states: “We know that your administration has met repeatedly with Israeli officials to confirm US support for “equal measures of freedom, dignity, security, and prosperity for both Israelis and Palestinians” without a mechanism to implement this.

They add that Israel's postponement of planned judicial reform will fail to "reduce systemic violence against Palestinians, including the annexation of Palestinian land." The Israeli government's actions are a clear violation of international law and commitments made to the United States; its agenda will destroy Palestinian communities and escalate tensions with Dire consequences for both Palestinians and Israelis. Only clear steps to change the political situation will pave the way for peace."

According to Haaretz, more than 70 progressive American Jewish leaders lent their support to the aforementioned letter, emphasizing that "As Jews living in the United States, we come from a range of histories, backgrounds, and relations with Israel/Palestine. We all value justice and human rights. State violence is clear." Israel, as well as settler violence, is getting worse under Israel's current far-right government and effectively diminishes the possibility of justice and liberation in the future."

It is noteworthy that the official spokesperson on behalf of the US State Department said, in response to a question from the Jerusalem correspondent when announcing the aforementioned letter on March 28, that the ministry does not comment on private correspondence between it and members of Congress.
