AI-enhanced cameras installed in watchtowers on the US southern border can spot "objects of interest" miles away that critics say will push migrants deeper into the dangerous desert, The Guardian reported Monday.

A new map showed more than 300 existing and 50 proposed watchtowers along the US-Mexico border, it said, citing the Electronic Frontier Foundation, a nonprofit organization focused on digital privacy, freedom of expression and innovation.

She pointed out that the observation towers, developed by the technology defense company "Anduril", operate day and night and use artificial intelligence to detect "things of interest" such as people or vehicles, noting that the cameras rotate to allow 360-degree imaging and can monitor people from a distance of 1.7 miles. (2.7 km).

And she added that critics mentioned that the strategy of "prevention through deterrence" pursued by several US administrations prompted migration through deserts and mountains, which led to the death or loss of thousands of migrants.

She added, "Border patrols have found the remains of about 10,000 immigrants in the past 25 years."

Citing a study by the University of Arizona, it reported that watchtowers in Arizona are significantly associated with increased deaths of immigrants because they take longer routes through the desert to avoid being monitored.
