Raisi: The Islamic Republic will ruthlessly confront those who are "enemies" of it

Tehran - (AFP) - Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi pledged on Tuesday that his country would not show mercy to "enemies" of the Islamic Republic, which has been witnessing protests for months following the death of the young woman, Mahsa Amini.

Since September 16, Iran has been witnessing protest movements following Amini's death, after she was arrested by the morality police in Tehran for not adhering to the country's strict dress code.

Officials considered a large part of these movements as "riots", and accused the country's enemies, led by the United States and Western countries, of being involved in it with the aim of destabilizing Iran.

Raisi said in a televised speech on Tuesday that "the recent events were the war of the parties, all the arrogant currents came to the field with all their might... the hypocrites, the supporters of the monarchy, all the anti-revolutionary currents, and all those who were harmed by this revolution, were involved" in the events.

His remarks came in front of large crowds in central Tehran during a funeral ceremony for the recovered remains of 200 soldiers who died during the Iran-Iraq war in the eighties of the last century.

Raisi stressed that "the bosom of the (Iranian) nation is open to all those who have been deceived. The youth are the youth of this country," stressing that "the bosom of the nation is open to all, but we will not show mercy to the enemies."

Human rights organizations outside Iran say that more than 450 demonstrators died during the protests, in which young people and women made up a large part of the participants.

For its part, official Iranian figures reported that more than 200 people, including dozens of members of the security forces, were killed on the sidelines of the protests, which included raising slogans against the authorities. Thousands have also been arrested and some of them have been referred to trial.

The Iranian judiciary confirmed the issuance of death sentences against 11 defendants, two of whom were executed, while the Supreme Court ordered a retrial of two others.

Rights activists say about a dozen others face charges that could lead to the death penalty.

Many Western countries expressed their support for the protests, and imposed sanctions on Tehran against the background of what it considers the authorities' suppression of the protesters.

On Tuesday, Raisi considered that the countries that supported the demonstrators had miscalculated.

And he believed that the supporters of the protests wanted to "distract the Islamic community" from its goals, addressing them without naming them, "Why did you miscalculate again? Why do you send us messages through different channels (and think that we) want to talk to you after insecurity has been eliminated thanks to the efforts of The people and the security forces that make sacrifices?

And he stressed that Iran "will not be deceived" by that.
