Agreement in the European Union to punish those responsible for repression in Iran
Brussels - (AFP) - The 27 member states of the European Union have agreed to punish Iranian officials involved in suppressing demonstrations sparked by the death of the young woman, diplomatic sources said Wednesday.
The same sources said that the political agreement reached by the ambassadors of the countries in Brussels must be confirmed by the European Union foreign ministers during their meeting on Monday in Luxembourg.
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen wrote on Twitter, "We asked for those responsible for the oppression of women to be held accountable. The time has come for them to be held accountable. The shocking violence to which the Iranian people are subjected cannot remain unanswered."
The European parliamentarians demanded that "Iranian officials, and in particular all individuals associated with the 'morality police', who are found to be complicit or responsible in the death of Mahsa Amini and acts of violence against demonstrators, be included in the EU's blacklist."
And individuals who are sanctioned by the European Union for violating human rights are prevented from entering the territory of the Union and their assets in member states are frozen.
On April 12, 2011, the European Union approved measures to punish serious human rights violations in Iran.
Other measures were added on March 23, 2012, foremost of which is a ban on the means that can be used for internal repression and those that can be used to monitor or intercept the Internet and communications on mobile or landline networks. These penalties apply until 2023.
