A majority in the Venezuelan opposition calls on Guaido to end the "transitional government"

CARACAS - (AFP) - The majority of Venezuelan opponents demanded Wednesday the end of the "interim government" of Juan Guaidó , considering that it has weakened, four years after its declaration by him, and has not achieved its political goals.

"We are going to the country (...) to implement the constitution of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela (and) to end the tasks of the interim government on the fourth of next January," said a statement signed by 69 out of 112 of these opponents.

These opponents had supported Guaidó declaring himself interim president in 2019, when the opposition controlled parliament.

"The expected goals of liberation have not been achieved, and the country needs new paths that lead us to democracy," said the group's statement.

This initiative comes on the eve of a session of the elected parliament in 2015, which confirms its legitimacy, considering that the 2020 legislative elections, which were won by the camp of President Nicolas Maduro, were rigged.

Guaido called at the end of last week to hold this session, stressing that his assumption of the "acting presidency" is "essential" in order to "not recognize the Maduro regime", diplomatic recognition and "protection" of the state's assets abroad.

"I can say with certainty that the constitutional mechanism (...) that we defended was useful in not recognizing the dictatorship and providing aid (...) protecting assets and supporting this phase of democratic resistance," Guaidó said in a video recording he posted on social media. , calling for waiting for the results of the discussions.

For their part, the signatories to the statement said that the broad international support that Juan Guaidó enjoyed in 2019 had diminished.

The United States still supports Guaidó, but he has lost the support of countries such as Argentina, Mexico, Peru, and more recently Colombia, which are all under left-wing rule.

The existence of the "interim government" in recent months has sparked divisions among the opposition, which is calling for primaries in 2023 to choose its only candidate who will face Nicolas Maduro in the 2024 presidential elections.
