Recording 479 violations by the occupation against Palestinian journalists during the first half of this year
Ramallah - "Jerusalem" dot com - A report issued by the Palestinian Journalists Syndicate , today, Friday, showed that 479 violations and crimes were recorded by the Israeli occupation against Palestinian journalists in the first half of the year 2022.
The report indicated that the Freedoms Committee in the Syndicate monitored 479 violations in the first half of the year, the most egregious of which was the assassination of fellow journalist Sherine Abu Aqleh, Al-Jazeera correspondent, explaining that the assassination of Sherine was a clear message from the Israeli occupation to disregard all international laws and covenants that provide for the protection of human rights. Journalists, and the occurrence of her assassination had a clear impact on journalists and the amount of danger that has become the artifact of their profession in Palestine.
The statistics monitored by the report showed that the violations varied between detention and prevention of coverage, which had the largest share in terms of the number of cases recorded at 175 cases, deliberate killing, arrest and targeting with bullets, as 35 bullets penetrated the bodies of journalists, in addition to the ban on travel and presentation to courts. Summons, beatings and other violations aimed at preventing journalists from carrying out their work.
The report pointed to the increase in the frequency of violations over time, as the number of violations in the first quarter of the year was 192, and rose to 287 violations in the second quarter.
The statistics also showed a remarkable increase in the number of attacks by settlers against Palestinian journalists, with the protection of the occupation army, and that the occupation did not differentiate between male and female journalists in practicing violence against them, as the percentage of female journalists subjected to violations represented 14%, and the killing cases deliberately targeted two female journalists: Shireen Abu Aqelh and forgiveness and Rasna.
The city of Jerusalem topped the largest share in the number of violations, with 131 violations, i.e. 30% of the total violations of the occupation, followed by Hebron Governorate and then Nablus Governorate.
The Palestinian Journalists Syndicate affirmed that journalistic work in Palestine is under fire, and journalists need to provide protection and support for them, reiterating its call to the relevant international and human rights institutions to take decisive steps to stop targeting journalists for their journalistic work.
