Kochavi: We prevented 400 attacks from the West Bank and achieved deterrence against Hamas
A translation of "Jerusalem" dot com - Chief of Staff of the Israeli army, Aviv Kochavi , claimed on Friday that his forces thwarted more than 400 attacks in the West Bank last year.
In an interview with Yedioth Ahronoth newspaper, Kochavi indicated that most of the operations carried out from the West Bank are individual and that no Palestinian factions or organized cells stand behind them.
And he indicated that his forces are operating within 3 main elements of its campaign in the West Bank, represented in strengthening the line of contact, continuing internal activity on roads and settlements, and most importantly, carrying out activities deep inside Palestinian cities around the clock based on intelligence information that he described as "excellent" from the Shin Bet.
He expressed his hope that the Palestinian Authority would play more roles in terms of improving the economic situation as well as politically, noting that security coordination with it is surprisingly good and maintained well in most areas, but it hardly works in Jenin and Nablus and therefore our operations there are broader, he said. .
Regarding the Gaza Strip , Kochavi said that his forces succeeded in "achieving deterrence" against the "Hamas" movement, especially in the past two years, which led to the cessation of demonstrations at the border, the throwing of balloons, and a significant reduction in rocket fire since Operation "Guardian of the Walls / Sword of Jerusalem." The deterrence force deepened during the "Dawn" operation against the Islamic Jihad months ago.
Kochavi claimed that the head of the "Hamas" movement in Gaza, Yahya Sinwar, himself admitted that his movement had been hit hard in recent years and had not achieved anything.
He considered that the current situation represents a favorable opportunity for the return of the Israeli prisoners and missing persons held by the "Hamas" movement.
In another context, Kochavi strongly criticized the transfer of the powers of the so-called "Border Police" to the Israeli Minister of National Security Itamar Ben Gvir, as well as his criticism of the transfer of powers to Minister Bezalel Smotrich related to civil administration and the coordinator of government actions.
And he considered that such measures, especially the issue of transferring the powers of the "Border Police", may affect any future confrontation, and will push the Israeli army to bring in other reserve forces in order to fill the shortage, and this will cause harm to the regular force of the army in any war.
