Palestinian efforts to urge states and institutions to boycott the Israeli government
RAMALLAH, (Xinhua) -- Two Palestinian diplomats revealed today (Thursday) Palestinian efforts to urge countries and institutions in the world to boycott the new Israeli government and stop all unilateral steps that may undermine the two-state solution.
The Permanent Representative of Palestine to the United Nations in Geneva, Ambassador Ibrahim Khreisheh, told the official Radio Voice of Palestine that meetings took place with the concerned authorities in Switzerland, the depositary country of the four Geneva Conventions, to put them in the form of the Israeli government's actions.
Khreisha added that other meetings will be held with the Arab ambassadors in Geneva, the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, and the President of the International Committee of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) this month to inform them of the new Israeli "violations", especially the deduction of Palestinian funds.
He added that these steps aim primarily at urging countries and concerned parties in the world to take clear practical steps to "boycott this government and its elements, as they are a group of extremists and murderers," calling on all parties to assume their responsibilities towards the Palestinian cause.
Khreisheh warned of "increasing Israeli escalation during the coming period, in light of the presence of an Israeli government whose members are devoted to extremism and the enactment of laws and legislation that violate international and humanitarian law."
In this context, the Arab and Islamic Group and the Non-Aligned Movement held a meeting today in New York with the Secretary-General of the United Nations, Antonio Guterres.
The Permanent Representative of Palestine to the United Nations, Ambassador Riyad Mansour, said in a press statement that the meeting that came with Palestine's request will present a common position on the need to respect the legal and historical status of Islamic and Christian places in Jerusalem.
Mansour added that the conferees called on Guterres to play a role in stopping the "illegal unilateral steps that might undermine the two-state solution, which Israel recently took."
Mansour revealed that intensive consultations had begun with member states of the UN Security Council prior to the session scheduled for January 18 to take specific practical steps to confront Israel's steps, which are the "attack" on Al-Aqsa Mosque and the adoption of a series of "punitive" measures.
On December 29, a new coalition government in Israel headed by Benjamin Netanyahu was sworn in in the Knesset (parliament), to be the most right-wing government in Israel's history, according to Israeli analysts.
Last Friday, the cabinet for security and political affairs in Israel (the Cabinet) approved punitive measures against the Palestinian Authority for its approach to the International Court of Justice in The Hague, including the deduction of $39.6 million from Palestinian tax funds.
