Widespread American pressure campaign to demand the release of student Sama Safi, detained by the occupation

The pace of human rights and political movements within the United States has escalated, demanding the immediate release of Palestinian-American student Sama Safi, who was abducted by Israeli occupation forces from the town of Birzeit four days ago. These movements come amid growing concern over the fate of the 20-year-old student, who studies at Birzeit University, as her arrest coincided with a campaign that targeted other female students, namely Natalie Abu Diyeh, Golan Abu Awwad, and Laila Khalil.

The Institute for Middle East Understanding has adopted an organized campaign calling on American citizens to directly contact senators to pressure the US administration. The campaign aims to push Washington to intervene urgently to ensure Sama's safety and secure her release, warning of the consequences of continued detention of American citizens without clear legal justifications in the occupied Palestinian territories.

For his part, Senator Chris Van Hollen strongly criticized the occupation authorities' handling of the case, noting via the X platform that the Israeli side has not provided any information to the US Embassy or to the student's family about her place of detention. Van Hollen stressed that this type of arbitrary detention, which takes place without formal charges, represents a blatant violation, demanding the immediate disclosure of her legal status.

In a related context, Senator Peter Welch expressed his deep concern about Sama Safi's health, revealing that she suffers from a chronic health condition that requires continuous medical care. Welch stressed the need to enable her to communicate with her family and legal team, and to ensure she receives the necessary treatment without delay, considering that depriving her of these basic rights exacerbates the seriousness of her situation in detention.

On the official level, the US State Department confirmed that it is fully aware of the incident of the American citizen's detention in the West Bank and is closely monitoring developments. A spokesman for the department explained that the administration is fulfilling its responsibilities towards protecting American citizens abroad, but he refrained from delving into additional details related to the course of investigations or diplomatic communications, citing privacy considerations related to the case.

This escalating crisis reflects the extent of tension in the relationship between American human rights organizations and the occupation's policies towards Palestinians who hold American citizenship. Sources demand the necessity of a firm American stance that ends the policy of administrative detention and detention without charge, especially in light of the systematic targeting of student cadres in Palestinian universities recently.

Israeli authorities have not informed Sama Safi's family or the US Embassy of the location or reason for the detention, which is taking place without formal charges.
