Trump in Beijing: Will 'The President's Deals' End the Iran War and Open the Strait of Hormuz?

US President Donald Trump began an official visit to the Chinese capital, Beijing, in a diplomatic move that takes on exceptional importance given the critical timing the world is experiencing. This visit, which started on May 13th and continues until the 15th, comes after an emergency postponement imposed by the outbreak of US-Israeli military confrontations with Iran, making the issue of ending the war and securing waterways at the top of the discussion agenda.

Trump is accompanied on this mission by a high-level delegation that includes an elite group of technology and industrial leaders in the United States, foremost among them Elon Musk, Tim Cook, and Jensen Huang. This gathering of CEOs from giant companies such as 'Nvidia', 'Boeing', and 'Goldman Sachs' aims to enhance the commercial dimension of the visit and seize new investment opportunities in the massive Chinese market.

The US President announced via his 'Truth Social' platform that his first demand from his Chinese counterpart, Xi Jinping, would be complete 'openness' for major American companies. Through this pressure, Trump seeks to enable American innovators to operate freely, especially in light of the regulatory restrictions faced by electronic chip and artificial intelligence companies during the past period.

The issue of the war on Iran and the necessity of reopening the Strait of Hormuz tops the negotiation table, as the closure of the strait has led to severe economic damage affecting the European continent and most countries of the world. Political circles hope that Chinese mediation will succeed in convincing Tehran to conclude a comprehensive agreement that ends the armed conflict and restores stability to global energy supply lines.

This visit is the first by a US president to China in nearly a decade, reflecting the size of the diplomatic gap that both parties are now trying to bridge. In addition to the Iranian file, discussions include thorny issues such as US arms sales to Taiwan, a file that Beijing considers a red line directly affecting its national sovereignty.

Reports from behind the scenes of the summit indicate that Trump is counting on China's need for stable oil flows, as it is the largest importer of Iranian crude, to push for an end to the war. In return, Trump faces internal pressures related to the upcoming midterm elections, where failure to lower energy prices and secure navigation poses a direct threat to the political future of his Republican party.

Despite the economic momentum, expectations remain cautious amid escalating tensions around Taiwan and the transformation of electronic chips and rare earth metals into weapons in the geopolitical struggle for influence. Observers believe that the current battle is not just a trade dispute, but a reshaping of the balance of power in the 21st century between the American and Chinese poles.

On the trade front, both sides seek to extend the temporary truce on tariffs reached last October during meetings in South Korea. This extension aims to avoid a comprehensive trade war that could destabilize the global economy, which is already suffering from the consequences of ongoing military conflicts in the Middle East.

The question remains about the ability of 'dealmaker' Donald Trump to complete a major swap that includes concessions on the Taiwan file in exchange for effective Chinese mediation with Iran. With the volume of trade between the two countries reaching approximately 582 billion dollars, economic interests remain the strongest driver that could push both parties towards a historic settlement that ends the current stalemate.

I will demand from President Xi, a leader of exceptional stature, the openness of China so that these wonderful people can show their magic.
