Cairo affirmed its commitment to "urgently pursuing a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip," while emphasizing the need to support Egypt in combating irregular migration at a time when it hosts approximately 9.5 million foreigners.
This came in a statement issued by the Egyptian presidency following President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi's reception of Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani, who is currently visiting Cairo.
The meeting addressed "the importance of cooperation between the two countries in combating illegal immigration and regular migration," according to a presidential statement.
He addressed the "need to support Egypt in this regard, especially given its success in preventing any boats carrying illegal immigrants from departing from the Egyptian coast since 2016, and its hosting of approximately 9.5 million foreigners displaced by the crises in the region."
The meeting also reviewed Egyptian efforts to achieve a ceasefire, exchange hostages and detainees, and deliver humanitarian aid, while affirming Egypt's rejection of the displacement of Palestinians from their land or the liquidation of the Palestinian cause.
The meeting also emphasized that recognition of an independent Palestinian state within the framework of a two-state solution represents the only guarantee for achieving lasting peace and stability in the region.
The meeting also addressed developments in Syria, Libya, and Sudan, maritime security in the Bab al-Mandab Strait, and developments in the negotiations between Iran and the United States regarding the Iranian nuclear issue.
This April, Washington and Tehran began talks on Iran's nuclear program. These were the first since US President Donald Trump withdrew from the nuclear agreement during his first term in 2018. The agreement provided for sanctions relief for Iran in exchange for restrictions on its nuclear program.
According to a statement from the Egyptian presidency, "Egypt's commitment to the stability of these countries and the protection of their peoples' resources and unity was emphasized, as was the importance of settling disputes through peaceful means, and the urgent pursuit of a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip."
The Italian Foreign Minister expressed his country's appreciation for Egypt's mediation efforts to achieve a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip, according to the same statement.
He affirmed his country's support for the early recovery and reconstruction plan for the Gaza Strip, proposed by Egypt and endorsed by Arab and Islamic countries at an Arab summit on March 4 and a meeting of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation days later.
Egypt, Qatar, and the United States are leading a mediation effort to end Israel's genocide against Palestinians in the Gaza Strip.
