Riyadh summit to discuss response to Gaza displacement plan postponed until Friday
A mini-Arab summit scheduled for Thursday to discuss a response to US President Donald Trump's plan for Gaza has been postponed until Friday and expanded to include the six Gulf Cooperation Council states, Egypt and Jordan, two Arab diplomats said Monday.
A Saudi source, who preferred not to be named because he was not authorized to speak to the media, said, "The mini-Arab summit in Riyadh has been postponed from Thursday to Friday, February 21."
He pointed out that "the summit will include the leaders of the six Gulf Cooperation Council countries, along with Egypt and Jordan, to discuss Arab alternatives to Trump's plans in the Gaza Strip."
Another Arab diplomatic source confirmed that the summit would be postponed for one day.
In this context, informed sources told Al-Araby Al-Jadeed that several countries are seeking to prepare a plan and present it to Washington, which should include disarmament in Gaza as a guarantee to stop the displacement plan and begin reconstruction.
The sources said that the plan will be presented to the US President, who has expressed his willingness to back down from some of the provisions of his plan, provided that a realistic alternative is presented that prevents the recurrence of confrontations with Israel and ensures the stability of the security situation in the Strip.
Arab diplomatic sources announced that US administration officials informed some Arab leaders that Trump was prepared to back down from the displacement plan if a formula was reached that would ensure that Hamas would not return to power or arm the resistance again.
The initial Arab visions proposed to end the crisis also include establishing an Arab financing fund, with the Gulf states as its main financier, and with reconstruction projects to be implemented under direct Saudi supervision and with the participation of Egyptian, Turkish and Emirati companies.
However, the proposed proposal does not include granting Gaza full sovereignty, as it indicates the continuation of the status quo before October 7, 2023, meaning not allowing the establishment of a sea or air outlet for the Strip, and relying on the land crossing with Egypt only, as part of the guarantees provided to the United States and Israel that Hamas will not return to power or resume arming the resistance in the future.
