UN official: Fuel is the only way to operate hospitals, schools, bakeries and homes in Gaza

The Executive Director of the United Nations Office for Project Services, Jorge Moreira da Silva, confirmed today, Thursday, that fuel is the only way to operate hospitals, schools, bakeries and homes in Gaza.

Da Silva said in a press statement that the United Nations Office for Project Services, with the ceasefire, has undergone a new process in purchasing and distribution, noting that 1.3 million liters are being brought in and distributed daily, which is essential for all sectors, especially in the health sector.

He added that the office not only brings in and distributes fuel, but also monitors the fuel to ensure its proper use.

While at the European Hospital in Gaza, Da Silva said that the hospital is one of the most important hospitals in the Strip, noting that before the Israeli aggression on Gaza, the office provided and installed solar panels outside the hospital to generate electricity, but “those panels disappeared because people had no other option to have electricity in their homes. Even some internally displaced people had to live under the panels because there was no other place to live because they lost their homes.”

He pointed out that the hospital currently relies on traditional fuel to generate electricity from generators, "but some generators are broken, and spare parts are not allowed to enter Gaza to repair those generators, which is a very difficult situation for the hospital," noting the shortage of equipment, medical supplies, antibiotics, surgery and medicines that the hospital is facing, in addition to the shortage of water and electricity.

The UN official stressed that this situation requires working quickly to bring in more humanitarian aid and prepare for early recovery.
