Trump Sanctions Karim Khan Over Netanyahu Arrest Warrants
The US Treasury Department imposed sanctions on the Prosecutor of the International Criminal Court, Karim Khan, on Thursday.
On February 7, US President Donald Trump signed an executive order imposing sanctions on the International Criminal Court for issuing an arrest warrant for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his former Defense Minister Yoav Galant on November 21 on charges of committing war crimes in the Gaza Strip.
Trump accused the international court of "unlawful and baseless actions targeting America and our close ally Israel."
Trump claimed in a statement last Friday that the ICC “baselessly and unlawfully targets the United States and its close allies like Israel.”
The US Treasury Department said in a statement on its website on Thursday evening that it had included Karim Ahmad Khan on the sanctions list of the department's Office of Foreign Assets Control.
Karim Khan is a prominent British lawyer, born in 1970. He held the position of British Crown Counsel, and is the third public prosecutor at the International Criminal Court, and the first to be elected by secret ballot.
Karim Khan served as Deputy Prosecutor of the International Criminal Court in 2007, and served as a legal adviser to the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia and Rwanda during the investigation of war crimes, and led investigations into crimes committed in Ukraine, Syria and South Sudan.
The United States enabled Israel to drop more than 85 explosive devices on the besieged Gaza Strip between October 7, 2023, and January 19, 2025, killing more than 48,000 Palestinian civilians, most of them women and children, and wounding more than 100 citizens, the overwhelming majority of them also women and children. The Ministry of Health in Gaza also reports that there are 14,000 missing.
