Israeli occupation releases two Palestinian bookstore owners after arresting them on Sunday

The Israeli occupation police released, on Tuesday, two owners of a Palestinian bookstore in the occupied city of East Jerusalem, after arresting them last Sunday on the pretext of “disturbing the peace.”

According to local sources, the Israeli authorities released the Palestinians Ahmed and Mahmoud Mona, owners of the “Scientific Library” branch on Salah al-Din Street in East Jerusalem, who were arrested following a raid on the library on Sunday.

The sources explained that they were released on condition of paying a fine (the amount of which was not immediately clear), after being detained in Al-Maskobiyeh prison in West Jerusalem.

She added that the Israeli decision to impose house arrest on them and ban them from the library is still in effect.

On Monday, the Israeli authorities extended their detention until Tuesday, when they will appear before the Magistrate's Court, on the pretext of "disturbing the peace."

The Hebrew newspaper Haaretz reported on Monday that the Israeli police raided the two branches of the library in East Jerusalem on Sunday, confiscated books from them, and arrested their owners on charges of selling publications that included “incitement to violence.”

While the Israeli human rights organization "B'Tselem" said, via the "X" platform on Monday, that the reason for the arrest is due to "selling books in Arabic, at a time when Israel continues its war on the entire Palestinian people, including the persecution and arrest of intellectuals."

A Jerusalem Magistrate's Court judge issued a search warrant at the request of the police, but the police found no evidence of incitement, so they charged the two bookstore owners with another charge, "disturbing the peace."
