Trump threatens to return to war if detainees are not released

US President Donald Trump said that if Hamas does not release "all the hostages" it is holding in Gaza by noon on Saturday, the ceasefire agreement with Israel must be cancelled.

Trump's public message comes after Hamas announced earlier Monday that it would suspend the release of three Israeli hostages scheduled for release on Saturday due to "Israeli violations."

Trump said this was his personal opinion and "Israel can override it," but his comments could "force" Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to comply with his wishes.

Trump made it clear that he expected all 76 remaining hostages held by Hamas to be released.

Hamas said earlier on Monday that its announcement of a delay in the release of the hostages was a "warning message to Israel" in order for mediators to pressure it to implement the deal in full.

An Israeli official said Hamas' announcement could be a response to Trump's plan to "take over Gaza" and a sign that the group doubts that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu will hold serious negotiations on the second phase of the deal.

“If they are not released by 12 o’clock on Saturday, I say call it off [the ceasefire] and all bets are off… all hell is going to break loose,” Trump told reporters in the Oval Office.

Trump stressed that Hamas is looking for reasons not to release more hostages because the hostages are "severely wounded physically and mentally...whatever you see is probably best."

"Not a trickle. Not three and two. All of them," he said, adding that he believed many of the hostages were dead.

Axios quoted Israeli officials as saying that at least nine of the remaining 17 hostages expected to be released in the first phase are alive, and that of the 59 remaining for the second phase, 24 may be alive, according to Israeli officials.

The US President also threatened, on Monday, to stop aid to Jordan and Egypt if they did not accept refugees, referring to the residents of Gaza.

Trump announced on Monday that he will meet with Jordan's King Abdullah II on Tuesday to discuss the issue of receiving Palestinians from the Gaza Strip.

"Tomorrow I will meet with the King of Jordan, and I believe he will take the deal, and he will take the Palestinians," Trump said while signing a number of executive orders at the White House.

Trump had proposed that the United States take control of Gaza from Israel, creating a "Middle East Riviera" after transferring the Palestinians to other places, including Egypt and Jordan.

The proposal sparked official rejection in Egypt, which stressed what it described as its constants regarding the Palestinian issue.

Trump spoke again on Monday about the Palestinians of the Gaza Strip, saying: "They will all leave when there is a better place to go."

Asked about the possibility of using military aid to pressure Egypt and Jordan, Trump said: "Maybe. Why not. If they don't agree, I might withhold that money."

Earlier on Monday, Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdel Aati, during a meeting with his US counterpart Mark Rubio in Washington, affirmed Egypt's "firm" position on the Palestinian issue.

The Egyptian Minister stressed the necessity of achieving the "legitimate" aspirations of the Palestinian people, most notably the establishment of an independent state on all of its national territory.
