Israeli government pushes bill to thwart prisoner swap deal

The Israeli government is pushing a bill through the Knesset that would prevent the possibility of reaching a prisoner exchange agreement, as well as stopping the war on Gaza, while talks on a prisoner exchange continue in the Qatari capital, Doha.

The bill was submitted by Knesset members Dan Iluz of the Likud party, Michal Voldiger of the Religious Zionism party, and Yitzhak Kroizer of the Otzma Yehudit party, and is now on the agenda of the meeting of the Ministerial Committee for Legislation next Sunday.

The stated goal of the bill, according to Israel's Channel 13 today, Thursday, is to "institutionalize the struggle against countries that finance and support terrorist operations carried out in Israel," and one of its clauses states that "the State of Israel will not allow a state that supports terrorism to be involved in political settlements between Israel and other countries and foreign entities."

The channel indicated that this clause, after the approval of the bill, will allow "the thwarting of the very important Qatari mediation within the framework of communications" regarding a prisoner exchange deal.

The channel added that the draft law may be subject to amendments if the Ministerial Committee for Legislation approves it and transfers it to the Knesset.

According to Israeli Channel 12, Hamas agreed, after receiving an Israeli list containing the names of 34 Israeli prisoners held in Gaza, to release the living prisoners mentioned in this list, including male prisoners under the age of 50, and described as a "humanitarian case."

Channel 12 added that Hamas is still insisting on its demands, especially the release of a large number of Palestinian prisoners in exchange for the release of every Israeli male prisoner under 50 years old, in addition to Hamas's demand to stop the war and withdraw the Israeli army from the Gaza Strip.
