US Congress ratifies Trump's presidential election victory
The US Congress on Monday ratified Republican Donald Trump's victory in the presidential election, making him the country's 47th president, after its members counted and confirmed the results of the Electoral College vote.
“Donald J. Trump of Florida received 312 votes...and Kamala D. Harris of California received 226,” said Vice President Kamala Harris, who faced Trump in the November election, adding that was “sufficient proof” that Trump and Vice President J.D. Vance were qualified to take the oath of office on Jan. 20.
Congress met in a snow-covered Washington on Tuesday to formally certify Trump's election as US president, four years after a mob of his supporters stormed the Capitol in a failed attempt to overturn his 2020 election loss.
Trump has continued to claim that his 2020 defeat was the result of widespread fraud, and he has warned throughout his 2024 campaign that he has similar concerns, even as he beat Democratic rival Harris and Vice President Joe Biden in last November's election.
