Safadi and Guterres call for ceasefire in Gaza and entry of sufficient aid
Jordanian Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi and UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres renewed their call on Friday for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza and to allow sufficient aid into the Strip.
This came during their meeting in New York City, according to a statement by the Jordanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
The statement said that Safadi and Guterres' talks "focused on efforts to stop the Israeli aggression on Gaza and the resulting humanitarian catastrophe," noting in this regard "the importance of protecting the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA)."
They stressed the "centrality of UNRWA's role, which cannot be dispensed with or replaced."
On October 28, the Israeli Knesset (parliament) approved a final ban on UNRWA activities in the occupied Palestinian territories, alleging that its employees support Hamas.
During their meeting, Safadi and Guterres renewed the call "to reach an immediate ceasefire in Gaza and ensure the entry of sufficient humanitarian aid into the Strip."
They discussed cooperation between Jordan and the United Nations organizations in efforts to deliver humanitarian aid to Gaza, according to the same statement.
With American support, Israel has been committing genocide in Gaza since October 7, 2023, leaving more than 150,000 Palestinians dead and wounded, most of them children and women, and more than 11,000 missing.
Within the framework of the war of extermination, the Palestinians in Gaza are suffering from a policy of starvation due to a shortage of food supplies because of Israel’s obstruction of the entry of humanitarian aid into the Strip, according to the confirmations of many international and UN institutions.
During their discussions, Safadi and Guterres also discussed developments in Syria.
The Jordanian minister stressed "the necessity of reaching a political solution that preserves Syria's unity, security, stability and the safety of its citizens."
On November 27, clashes erupted between Syrian regime forces and opposition factions in the western countryside of Aleppo Governorate, north of the country.
The factions were able to extend their control over the center of Aleppo city on November 30, and most areas of Idlib Governorate in the northwest of the country.
Yesterday, Thursday, the factions expelled the regime forces out of Hama Governorate in the center of the country, following violent clashes between the two sides.
On Friday, the factions continued their advance to control new areas in Homs Governorate (central), which has strategic importance on the road to Damascus.
This coincided with the "Freedom Dawn" operation launched by the Syrian National Army in early December, with the aim of thwarting attempts to establish a terrorist corridor between Tal Rifaat in Aleppo Governorate and northeastern Syria. It was able to liberate Tal Rifaat from the terrorists of the "PKK/YPG" organization.
